Tijuana Panthers Are Back

The Long Beach trio are set to return after three years with new album, Carpet Denim, out this Friday, July 12th.

Tijuana Panthers have been a staple of the indie-rock scene in Southern California for over a decade now. The trio, comprised of Daniel Michicoff, Chad Wachtel and Phil Shaheen, met as teenagers in Long Beach and in 2006 they officially formed the band. Over time, their string of releases took them out of Long Beach and to stages around the world. It's been a few years since we've heard from them, but they are finally set to return with their highly anticipated fifth LP, Carpet Denim. The album drops this Friday, via Innovative Leisure.

The guys have released three tracks from the album thus far to give us a taste of what's to come - "Path of Totality", "Little Pamplemousse", and most recently "You Died".  The teasers are a breath of fresh air as they show that all the parts of Tijuana Panthers are in-tact, just a bit more grown up. They still have that talent of tackling heavy topics lyrically while keeping the track fun and lighthearted ("Path of Totality"), they still can be very thrashy and punk when they want to ("Little Pamplemousse"), and they can flip to being more relaxed and introspective without messing up the flow ("You Died").

You can tell though that Tijuana Panthers have grown, both lyrically and sonically. Their life experiences have widened and the topics reflect that - family, mortality, addiction. You can even hear it in the tracks themselves. They continue to explore sounds and stay weird and unique, but it feels more intentional and less loose. It's all great progress and one thing is for certain, they are still having a lot of fun. With this band in particular, that's really all that matters.
