The legendary producer returns with "That's Life", featuring Sia and the late Mac Miller.
For those who aren't familiar, 88-Keys is an absolute legend. He's the Grammy-Winning producer behind some of the best Hip-Hop tracks out there and has worked with artists such as Black Star, The Pharcyde, Kanye West and many more. In 2008, he released The Death of Adam - a 14-track concept album that is risqué and hilarious, while offering a poignant commentary on one of human's strongest drives, sex. It's genius.
88-Keys has returned with easily one of, if not the, best songs of 2019 thus far, "That's Life". On the song, he chops up the vocals from Valerie Simpson's "Benjie" and adds a soulful horn arrangement on top. The beat alone can bring you to tears, but then comes Mac. The late rapper, who tragically passed away last year after releasing the Grammy nominated album Swimming, feels at the top of his game with this track. He delivers two verses and a chorus about the ups and downs of life with ultimately a freeing, cathartic message, "Everybody live a little, everybody die. That's life. What you gonna do?". Then comes Sia. One of the most significant vocalists of our time wraps up the song, delivering a powerful, heart-wrenching bridge into the final chorus.I think 88-Keys had a lot of weight on his shoulders with this one. Mac Miller has touched the lives of millions worldwide and is one of the most important artists of the past decade. I think 88 knew that he had to deliver a song that did right by Mac, his family, his legacy, and his fans and he didn't just meet those high expectations, he blew them away. The artwork is a perfect depiction of the song because I know Mac is smiling down at this one.
